When designing a commercial washroom with the Dolphin Alavo Behind Mirror System, the Alavo mirror configuration must align with both the tap layout and the way users interact with the washstation.

A common issue is specifying wall mounted or counter mounted taps with Alavo, and attempting to have fewer, wider Alavo mirrors to reduce the number of joins (unit connection points).

Although Alavo offers plenty of ways to customise each handwashing system, sometimes this particular plan often leads to layout problems, particularly when tap spacing, mirror height limits, and user positioning are not taken into account.

This article explains why fewer, wider mirrors aren’t always ideal or workable with multiple counter mounted or wall mounted taps, and why, in many commercial washroom layouts, specifying more (but narrower) mirror units in an Alavo mirror configuration can deliver better usability and a cleaner design outcome.

Mirror configuration for commercial washrooms

Mirror Configurations That Work in Commercial Washrooms

Some designers prefer perfectly equal mirror widths, others specify one mirror unit per tap, and many, particularly in the context of this article, aim for a single long mirror spanning the entire washstation to reduce the amount of mirror connection joins.

While all of these approaches can be achieved, the final design outcome ultimately depends on key factors such as mirror height, tap quantity, and user spacing, which together determine how an Alavo washstation can be configured.

Standard Mirror Size Limits

Alavo can be manufactured in a range of variable and maximum sizes, but the mirror dimensions should always be coordinated with the tap layout.

Before finalising the Alavo mirror size, ensure it aligns with the number of taps and their spacing so the system functions and looks as intended.

Standard Mirror HeightVariable HeightMaximum Width
800mm750mm - 850mm1800mm
1000mm950mm - 1050mm1800mm
1200mm1150mm - 1250mm1200mm

The variable heights ensure all behind mirror components, such as control boxes, washroom products, plumbing, and electrical systems, fit properly.

For unique layouts, a bespoke Dolphin Alavo mirror configuration can be discussed with a washroom consultant.

Why Alavo Units Have Height & Width Limits

  1. Size limits in an Alavo mirror configuration protect the structural integrity of fittings and gas struts.
  2. Taller and wider mirrors outside of our standard range are heavier and harder to maintain, so limiting the maximum size ensures durability, cost-effectiveness, and a trouble-free experience.
  3. The minimum tap spacing is set to comply with ergonomic standards.

Tap Spacing and System Width

While a single mirror spanning multiple taps may appear ideal, Alavo’s modular design means each unit is installed side by side, with mirror joins that appear at each module connection point.

Alavo can be specified with integrated behind mirror taps or with wall mounted or counter mounted taps, but each option comes with its own set of considerations that must be factored into the design.

Integrated Behind Mirror Taps

Behind mirror taps are spaced at 600mm apart, which directly impacts the overall width of your Alavo mirror configuration.

Behind mirror taps are never placed behind a join connection point to ensure pictograms remain visible and aligned.

Limitations:

  • 800mm-high systems cannot include behind mirror taps for two or more washstations due to plumbing requirements.
  • 1200mm-high systems with multiple washstations can be provided as a bespoke Alavo mirror configuration.

Counter Mounted and Wall Mounted Taps

When specifying three or more taps (especially an odd number like five or seven taps), the Alavo mirror configuration must be planned carefully to avoid a tap being installed directly under a mirror connection point.

For example, because of Alavo’s size limitations, attempting to span three taps under two maximum width mirrors will position the central tap directly under a join.

Anyone using that tap would see a mirror join straight through their reflection.

Thus, a three-mirror Alavo mirror configuration is the solution to ensure each tap is properly framed and the user experience is preserved.

Even and Odd Numbers of Taps

To reduce the number of connection points between each unit, the final Alavo mirror configuration depends on tap quantity and the system’s maximum and minimum width.

Here are some examples of how 2 or more taps can be configured to limit the number of mirror joins:

2 taps: achievable with one mirror with no join connection points

Alavo two taps and one mirror

3 taps: two mirrors put a join through the centre tap → specify 3 set mirrors instead

Alavo three taps and three mirrors

4 taps: can be split into two equal mirrors with one join between each mirror

The Impact of Mirror Height

Mirror height also affects how many joins your Alavo mirror configuration requires:

  • 1000mm high: mirrors up to 1800mm wide = fewer joins
  • 1200mm high: mirrors up to 1200mm wide = more joins

Example:

4 tap run at 1000mm high mirrors = 2 mirrors

4 tap run at 1200mm high mirrors = 4 mirrors

Pictograms and Behind Mirror Equipment

Whether the design includes manual counter mounted commercial taps or wall mounted sensor taps, the layout must accommodate:

  • Pictogram alignment with behind mirror washroom products (paper towel dispensers, touch free soap dispensers, behind mirror hand dryer)
  • User positioning
  • Visual balance

These factors influence the final Alavo mirror configuration for your project.
