The Central House building, once home to the renowned Cass School of Architecture, Art and Design, is a prominent landmark. Its recent refurbishment, led by Allford Hall Monaghan Morris, breathes new life into the 1960s structure, expanding floor space to accommodate additional retail and office use, while demonstrating a design approach grounded in thoughtful spatial planning and meticulous attention to detail.
The overall design is believed to have drawn inspiration from Turner Prize-winning artist Rachel Whiteread, a leading contemporary artist. The result is a sensitively reimagined building that now stands as a striking example of 21st-century architectural renewal.
Restroom project brief
In keeping with the building’s contemporary aesthetic, the Central House restroom project set out to bring a bold sense of radiance to the space, using abstract, unconventional color choices rarely seen in standard commercial restroom design.
The original brief called for the striking RAL 2000 orange to feature prominently, with vibrant accents carried throughout the entire restroom scheme, including the single user restrooms, end of trip facilities, and commercial showers.
This highly distinctive design required meticulous attention to detail, ensuring absolute precision in the color application across all elements, from mounted faucets and commercial soap dispenser holders to paper towel dispensers, waste bins, and more.
The result is a visually cohesive and unforgettable restroom experience that perfectly complements the building’s modern transformation.
Restroom project challenge
Working on the Central House restroom project was a smooth and efficient process overall.
The only notable challenge arose when trying to match the shower heads to the rest of the commercial restroom supplies. The selected special coating for the commercial shower heads made achieving an exact color match more difficult.
However, as finishing technologies continue to evolve, especially in coating complex surfaces, we are quickly approaching a future where full RAL color customization across all commercial restroom products, including those with intricate special finishes, will be entirely achievable.
The Dolphin solution
Shower head colour
To align with the bold restroom design, a high-contrast color was the ideal choice.
The shower heads were finished in sleek black, a deliberate decision that complemented the vibrant restroom fittings throughout the shower rooms. This striking contrast resulted in a refined and visually compelling balance, blending vivid accents with contemporary elegance to create a truly distinctive commercial restroom.
Restroom product colors
To deliver on the initial design brief, the Dolphin team created a curated sample board featuring a range of commercial restroom supplies, including a waste bin, paper towel dispenser, toilet roll holder, robe hook, toilet brush, wall mounted faucet, and waste drain, all finished in the bold polyester powder coat RAL 2000 orange.
The sample board was presented during one of Dolphin’s signature Showcase Pop-up events, hosted at the client’s premises. Following the enthusiastic approval of RAL 2000, the team was commissioned to develop six additional abstract powder coating color samples within our mounted faucet range, each carefully tailored to the client’s creative vision.
All seven colors were successfully approved and selected for the final project, bringing vibrant individuality to every commercial restroom space.
Budget-friendly solutions
With cost efficiency being a key consideration for the Central House restroom project, the decision was made to forgo sensor faucets in favor of more budget-conscious alternatives.
Dolphin’s DB1675 mixer faucet and DB1650 Monobloc mixer faucet were selected, offering reliable performance, timeless design, and excellent value without compromising on quality or aesthetic impact.
The restoom project result
With Central House targeting WELL Gold and a BREEAM Excellent rating, it was only fitting that our client selected Dolphin’s manual faucets, engineered to meet the required flow rates for sustainable certification without compromising on style.
Over 100 commercial faucets and other commercial restroom supplies were polyester powder coated in precise, custom colors supplied by Dolphin Solutions for the Central House restroom project. The result? A vibrant, contemporary restroom design that confidently aligned with the architectural vision for the building.
These boldly colored restroom products broke away from conventional commercial norms, injecting energy, character, and a sense of playfulness into each space. While unexpected, the color choices brought the design to life, perfectly reflecting the creativity, culture, and charm of the geographic location.
The photographs truly speak for themselves. We are proud to have contributed to a restroom design concept that not only delivered on budget and design expectations but also redefined what a commercial restroom can be.
